Tips for an Eco Friendly Bonfire Night

Remember, Remember the 5th of November - like many large-scale celebrations, bonfire night has the possibility to create a negative environmental impact, so while we don't want to spoil everyone's fun we have some suggestions to make it a more eco-friendly occasion.

Here at Nigel's Eco Store we are stocking up on mulled wine and heading over to nearby Lewes, East Sussex for their spectacular fireworks display and parade, but if you are planning to stay at home to celebrate here's my green bonfire tips to make sure your fireworks night goes with an environmentally friendly bang.

Bonfires cause environmental damage due to the release of gases and toxins in the smoke. Try to burn only clean, dry garden waste like untreated wood and branches this minimises the amount of smoke produced. You can use small amounts of leaves, card and paper for kindling.

Remember not to burn plastics, oils, household rubbish, aerosols, rubber tyres, cannisters or anything containing foam or paint as they produce toxic fumes.

Try to build your bonfire as close as you can to lighting it to reduce the risk that wildlife might get inside. Remember to check for hedgehogs!

Don't forget your pets - most dogs hate fireworks. If you have a cat or a dog try to keep it inside after dark and if possible place your outdoor pets such as rabbits in a garage or outbuilding.
